Our Mission at Herefords on Latimer

Erik or "Eggnog" as our kids like to call him

Excelling in Genetics

There is only one true investment on the farm that can live up to being "The best improvement for your farm"; the breeding bull in the pasture. If you maintain a closed herd, the genes entering the cow herd will come completely from the bulls you select. Following 3 generations of retained heifers, 87.5% of the genetic make-up of the females you return to the herd is the result of the last 3 bulls you purchased. When you consider the long term impact of the breeding bull, you can never buy a bull that is "too good".

Spring Pastures

Sustainable Farming

We believe that sustainable farming practices are essential for the health and future of our soil. Our fields are treated like they will be farmed for many generations. In doing so, we have received a Water Quality Certificate on behalf of the State of Minnesota. Some of our practices include no-till planting our crops with the latest technology from Precision Planting using GPS that is accurate to one inch. Placing as much fertilizer below the surface level as possible using metered GPS units to reduce runoff. Rotational grazing allows our cows and bred heifers to stay in fresh green pastures all summer long.

Beef for Sale

Our cattle are raised on grass and wintered on our harvested fields for high quality, lean fat meat. Our cattle are born and raised with their mothers in grass pastures till the traditional weaning age of 6-8 months. To keep it low of stress as possible for mother and calves, we choose to fence line wean on no-till fields and pastures. They graze crop residue in the winter as weather permits. This has a plethora of benefits, some examples are the increase in micro biology, decrease in commercial fertilizer and rest periods for the summer pastures. When the snow cover is too thick, hay is rolled out. Rolling out the hay bales leaves less reside behind and spreads out the nutrients evenly. We don't believe in giving our cattle growth hormones. They thrive on mainly grass and a little crop residue. You can take pride in knowing where your meat is coming from! By butcher date the average animal live weight is 1,200 lbs.
